Thriller Conventions

Conventions of a thriller:

Heroic Protagonist:

  • Wrong man's shoes- Roger O. Thornhill (North by Northwest-1959)
  • Innocent man- Sam Marlowe (The trouble with Harry-1955)
  • Ex-Military- Bryan Mills (Taken-2008)
  • Agents/Spies- James Bond/George Smiley (James Bond/ Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy)
  • Role reversal (Hunter becomes hunted)-Jason Bourne (Jason Bourne)
Villainous Antagonist:

  • Psychopathic
  • Anti-Government person
  • Smooth/Suave
  • Foreign
  • Has strong political/ religious beliefs
Mise-En-Scene:

  • Protagonists/Antagonist usually wearing suits/smart clothing
  • Antagonists often have scars
  • Low key lighting
  • Set in large urban areas (Big cities) or open rural areas (Countryside)
  • Weather is usually rainy or stormy (Pathetic Fallacy)
Sound:

  • Low tone slow music to show the characters feelings
  • Fast pace music during action/horror scenes
  • Antagonist/Protagonist usually have deep, manly voices

Features of a Thriller:

  • High amounts of suspense
  • Usually involves a character on a mission
  • Fight scenes
  • Mystery- usually doesn't reveal a lot to the audience and leaves it for the imagination
Editing:

  • Shot reverse shot used during a conversation or argument
  • Cross-cutting to add atmosphere
  • Ellipsis of time to make a lot of things happen in a short clip
Camera:

  • Close up camera shots to give viewers better impression of characters feelings
  • Medium-Long shot gives audience wider view of what's going on in the scene
